Boston

Impendle Nature Reserve
Drakensberg.
The reserve is 75 km west of Pietermaritzburg on the Southern Drakensberg route, between Boston, Bulwer and Impendle.

This reserve falls within the southern borders of the Natal midlands and uplands, with the Mkhomazi River forming part of its southern boundary. It is surrounded on two sides by the former KwaZulu, with plantations and private cattle farms bordering the remaining eastern areas. Deep gorges cut through the escarpment where cataracts, waterfalls and rocky pools abound below the filtered sunlight of the forest canopy. Numerous species of lilies, irises and orchids can be seen on the rocky hills and grasslands, as well as along the stream banks. There are nine perennial earth dams and a number of springs and seepage areas.

Blinkwater Nature Reserve
Midlands.
The reserve is situated approximately 15 km from Sevenoaks, off the Sevenoaks-Rietvlei District Road D151. Access is through private farmland.

Scenic trail, grasslands, indigenous forests. 100km trail for 2 or 6 day hikes. Four overnight huts - sleeps 12.

Craigie Burn Public Resort Nature Reserve
Natal Midlands, midway between Greytown and Mooi River on the Rietvlei Road.

The land area of 113 hectares is of the karoo system, ecca series, consisting of shale, sandstone and grit at an altitude of 1 308m. The vegetation is highland sourveld, typical of the upland moist area.

Ingelosi Hideaway
Midlands. 12 km south of Greytown, 3 km west of the main road linking Greytown-Pietermaritzburg.

This small reserve supports a fauna and flora of considerable interest, with 116 bird species recorded. The area of reed swamp and open water is a sanctuary of major importance for wildfowl.

Mhlopeni Nature Reserve
Midlands. Between Greytown and Muden. The turn-off to Mhlopeni is 3 km from Muden on the Greytown-Muden Road. Care must be exercised on the reserve's rough gravel road after rain.

A wild, beautiful river valley with small waterfalls, rock pools, imposing krantzes, secluded ravines, and rolling acacia-studded grassveld with dramatic views from the plateaux. There are numerous walking trails, a wide range of game, and some 210 bird species, particularly birds of prey. The reserve is ideal venue for school groups involved in natural history projects.

Montello Safari Lodge
Midlands, near Greytown. From Pietermaritzburg take the road to Greytown. At the first robot on arriving in Greytown turn left. Travel for 10 km to the top of the hill, then right at Montello Safari Lodge sign (District Road D80). Travel 4 km along a gravel road, then left at the Montello sign and proceed to large gates. The lodge is a further 6 km.

The lodge is conveniently situated for visits to a number of Historic Boer, British and Zulu battlefields. Montello can also be booked for conferences and up to 34 people can be catered for. Montello is a popular venue for weddings & functions there are regular game drives, guided walks and trails that can be organised including game spotting and horseback.
