Richmond and Byrne

The so-called Byrne Scheme of 1850 tempted settlers from Britain with a 'promised land'...but the reality carried a price. Most were shipwrecked as they approached the entrance to Port Natal-Durban, and their allotted territory - once they reached it -was a far cry from the gentle farmlands of the 'Old Country'. Many returned on the first available passage, but the hardiness of those who stayed to meet the challenge is a constant echo. The legacy of indentured Indian labour adds an exotic dimension to the mix of colonial heritage and rural Zulu lifestyle. Richmond has become an important seat of local government, in addition to serving the educational, business and transport needs of the community.
