Tatham Art Gallery
Cnr Commercial Rd/Church Street, Pietermaritzburg
It has a superb collection of South African, British and French 19th and 20th century art, with an emphasis on KwaZulu-Natal. The building was constructed in 1871 to house the supreme court. In 1989/90 it was converted into an art gallery.

Artifacts


Cloete's Cannon
The cannon was used by Colonel Josias Cloete in lifting the siege of the Port Natal Garrison in 1842. It was brought up to Pietermaritzburg but not used in action. In the Tatham (city) Gardens, at the junction of Commercial Road and Church Street, city centre.


German Field Guns
The guns are in the City Hall Gardens alongside Commercial Road, and placed on each side of the Carbineers' monument.

These are two german field guns captured by Sir Duncan Mckenzie's force at Gibeon in South West Africa on April 27, 1915.


World War Two Tank
An example of the type of tank used by British and American forces in world war one. Commercial Road, at the junction with Alexandra Road, outside the Alan Wilson Shellhole.

Alexandra Road Police Station
Alexandra Road/ Corner Lindup Road
The building served from 1890 as a barracks for the Natal Mounted Police (later known as Natal police). It was later used as the headquarters building of the S.A.P. in Natal, and is still in use by the S. A. Police Services. The old police barracks building was declared a national monument in February 1992.


Allerton Laboratory
Town Bush Valley near Pietermaritzburg
The first of its kind in South Africa, the lab was established by the Natal Government in 1898 to control rinderpest, a deadly cattle disease. Its first director was Col. Pitchford, who achieved enviable results in disease control. The lab became an adjunct to Onderstepoort. It is a national monument.


Allison's Saddlery Building

This is an elegant old store with gables, turret and ironwork.


Andries Pretorius's House
Corner of Church Street and Boshoff Street
This is the reconstructed thatched-roof, double storey house of Andries Pretorius, the 'Victor' of Blood River. It is part of the Voortrekker Museum, and was opened in December 1981. It contains fine furniture from last century. The museum complex, of which the house is a part, is a national monument.

This attractive red-brick and plaster building has an ornamental verandah frieze and slender columns. It was erected in 1901.


Buchanan Street Baths
Buchanan Street
This is a fine example of the indoor swimming baths found in Victorian cities. This large hall with flemish renaissance gables over the entrance porch was built between 1895 and 1898.


City Hall, Pietermaritzburg
City Centre, at the junction of Church Street and Commercial Road.
The city hall was built on the old site of the Voortrekkers council hall. It was first built in 1893, but after a fire in 1898 the new building was ready in 1900. It is the largest all-brick building south of the equator, and is a national monument. More information ....

Built in 1885, Clark House was named after the famous headmaster of Maritzburg College, R.D.Clark , and was know as the 'Main Building'.


Clock Tower Building
University of Natal, PMB
This is the oldest building on campus and was the home of the first Natal college of the University of South Africa, established in 1910.

Dudgeon's Standard Bank
Crn Church and Bank Streets.
The building was designed by Philip Dudgeon and erected in 1882. Its stained glass windows depict the seasons in the northern hemisphere.

The shop was designed by C.H.Stott in 1865 and built in 1866. In 1978 the fine fa ade was preserved during renovations.

Fine Victorian Villa, Burger Street
This double storey verandah house is now the headquarters of the S.A.Timber and Wattle Growers Association. The former Victorian villa of much distinction contributes greatly to the built environment of the city.

The bank was built in 1903. This is a high-character example of a double-storey city building of the Edwardian era.

Government House (old)
South end of Longmarket Street near the PMB Railway Station.
The original building was owned by Dr William Stanger, Natal's first government surveyor, but acquired by Sir Benjamin Pine to become his residence. It eventually became the premises of the Natal Training College and, more recently, of the College of Education for further training. It is a national monument.


Harwin's Arcade

Built in 1904, this is a high character Edwardian building designed in the renaissance revival style.

John Bird House

This house was occupied at different times by Pietermarizburg's most prominent citizens. It was built in 1852 and is regarded as perhaps the earliest extant example of a domestic homestead of the British period.

This is an imposing Victorian house.


Longmarket Street School

Modelled on schools in England and Europe, it shows some masterly and superb brickwork with window canopies and a supreme quality in finishings. It is now a museum.


Loop Street Police Station
Loop Street, corner of Murray Street.
The building was originally the engineers' offices of the Old Natal Government Railways, but now the local headquarters of the S.A. Police Services. It was designed in classical renaissance style by the architect E. Wellman and built during 1901 to 1903. It was declared a national monument in October 1991.


Macrorie House

This fine Victorian museum contains furniture and relics of the early British settlers. It was built in 1862.

Marian Villa

This house was originally called Lansdown and was built about the time of world war one for Dr Conrad Ackerman. It is a copy of the beautiful Sans Souci House built in the 1880's by John Harwin as his residence.


MC Auslins Chambers

It was originally a Stonemasons. The building has an elegant facade with slender iron columns and ornamental gables and pediments.


McNamee's
Church Street
It was built in 1903, this building is in the flemish renaissance revival style and features red brick walls with elaborate plaster moulds.


Merchiston Preparatory School

This is a typical colonial-type primary school building with a twin gabled facade and classrooms opening onto verandahs surrounding a spacious central courtyard.

Natal Government Railway Headquarters

Built in 1903, this building is now the local headquarters of the South African Police.


Natal Mounted Police Headquarters

The building was designed by Albert Henry Hime in 1878 and completed in 1890.


Natal Parliament Building
The foundation stone was laid in June 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria's jubilee. This building contains some interesting relics of colonial days and includes recent works of art of RSA artists as the building is now used full time for KZN legislature, but encourage tourism potential.

Old Allerton State Veterinary Laboratory
458 Town Bush Road, PMB.
Erected as a state laboratory, it was the first lab of its type in Natal and also one of the first weather stations in the area. It was declared a national monument in December 1993.


Old Central Block, Natal University
'Arts Block', Central Block Of University
The foundation stone was laid on 10 August 1910 by the Earl of Connaught and the building opened in 1912. Also known as the arts block, it is the oldest and most architecturally impressive building on campus. It was declared a national monument in March 1986.


Old Colonial Building

The soaring columns of this elegant building are a fine example of the architecture of the late 19th century.


Old Model Boys' School

Old Natal Houses of Parliament

In 1889 the first building was inaugurated as the meeting place of the legislative council of 12 elected colonists and four nominated officials. The building housed the Natal Provincial Chamber in 1910. It is a national monument.


Old Natal University Central Block

The foundation stone of this building was laid on 10 August 1910 by the Earl of Connaught. The building was open in 1912. It is a national monument.


Old Pentrich Railway Station
Woods Road, Pietermaritzburg
The station was erected in 1906 by the Old Natal Government Railways. It was declared a national monument in August 1990.


Old Prison Cell Blocks

The prison complex was built in 1862, and held King Dinuzulu for a time. It was declared a national monument in July 1996.


Old Stock Exchange

This building served as the stock exchange for approximately one year. From, 1902 t0 1903.


Old Supreme Court
Commercial Road, at centre of city.
The complex was completed in 1871, this fine example of colonial architecture formed the central complex of the capitals defensive system during the Zulu war of 1879. It is now the Tatham Art Gallery.


Old Victoria Club Building

The club was on the site (until recently), since 1897. It was noted for flying the Union Jack as its house flag. A tortoise named Durando was the mascot.


Old YMCA Building

This building was completed in 1881 for the YMCA and is a fine example of a double storey verandah home. It was proclaimed a national monument in 1981.


Overpark House
122 Loop Street, Pietermaritzburg
It was built in 1862 as the Presbyterian Manse. For many years it was known as the 'Ghost House' and was almost derelict before being restored in 1980.


Pavilion
The foundation stone was laid in 1897 and it was officially opened on May 24 , 1898. Park Drive, in Alexandra Park, near the bandstand.


Pietermaritzburg Post Office

The building was opened in 1903. The facade is constructed entirely of natal dressed stone with a great variety of shape and design.


Poole's Building

The building was completed in 1899, and restored in 1988.


Post Office

Opened in 1903 in the Edwardian era, the post office is made of Natal dressed stone. The building is a national monument.


Prison Cell Block
2 Burger Street, PMB
The prison complex was built in about 1862 and once held King Dinuzulu. It is part of one of the oldest surviving government buildings in Pietermaritzburg. It was declared a national monument in July 1996.


Publicity House
Corner of Commercial Road/Longmarket Street, opposite the Tatham Gallery
Completed in 1884 ,this building is now the headquarters of the Pietermaritzburg Publicity Association. In the past it has served as the headquarters for the Borough Police and Fire Departments. It is a national monument.


Railway Station
South end of Church Street and Railway Street
This building dates back to 1892. It is built in red brick with contrasting iron stone facings. Here in 1893, Mahatma Gandhi endured the famous incident when he was put off the train as a person of colour.


Reid's Building

This was the first triple-storey house in Pietermaritzburg. The design is renaissance revival, with a lacey, cast-iron Victorian verandah.


Sans Souci

This elaborate mansion took four years to build and was completed in 1884. It was built by John Harwin and is a national monument.


Satya Vardhak Crematorium
The Satya Vardhak Sabha was formed in 1928 to promote principles of hygiene and the philosophy of reincarnation as embodied in Vedic teachings. The original crematorium was built in 1928, and was declared a national monument in January 1993.


Shepstone House
This tall, two storied building was first the home of Sir Theophilus Shepstone's eldest son. At present it is the resident master's home.


Shuter House

Shuter House is a national monument.


Town Hill Mental Hospital
Town Bush Valley Road, Pietermaritzburg
Completed by 1904, the central double storey block has projecting porticos and a roof turret capped with a fine cast iron crown.


Victoria Hall
Maritzburg College, College Road
The hall was begun in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria's jubilee, but was only completed in 1899. During the Boer-War it served as a fever hospital and thereafter as the school assembly hall. It is a national monument.


Voortrekker House

This is the only surviving double storey Voortrekker House in Pietermaritzburg. It was built by Petrus Pretorius in 1846.


Voortrekker House No 2
Loop Street, Pietermaritzburg
This single storey residence dates back to 1852 and once was a farmhouse. It still has its original yellowwood floors.


Wayland

The large, double-storey house was designed in the gothic revival style. It was used by the YMCA as a hostel and then became a luxury home. Wayland was declared a national monument in 1983.


Whitehorn and Gough's Building

The building was built in 1903. The facade, gable and a series of front windows high up are very attractive features together with the slender metal posts which support the roof over the pavement.


Widow Retief's House

This is the former house of Piet Retiefs widow. Where she ran a bakery. Built in 1840, only part of the original house remains.


YMCA Building
Longmarket Street, Pietermaritzburg
This building was completed in 1881 and is a fine example of a double- storey verandah house.

Voortrekker graveyard
Commercial Road, towards the Umzindusi River.
The oldest graves in the city may be found here. Martin West, the first Lieutenenant Governor of Natal, was buried here.

Christian Science Church

This imposing church building with its gothic and romanesque features was originally built as a congregational church in 1903/4. It was declared a national monument in June 1981.

Church Of The Covenant
Church street, 100 metres north of Freedom Square.
This building, the original church of the vow, was built in 1841 to commemorate the Boer victory over the Zulus on 16 December 1838 at Blood River. The museum contains a wide variety of voortrekker relics. Adjacent are Andries Pretorius's House, and statues of Piet Retief and Gert Maritz. The complex is a national monument.


Italian Church
Church street, 100 metres north of Freedom Square.
This little church is all that remains of the italian prisoner of war camp that once stood here. The church was constructed by the prisoners and was concecrated on March 19, 1944.


Old Presbyterian Church
Church Street, Pietermaritzburg
Built in 1852, this was the first British church in Pietermaritzburg.


Old St Mary's Anglican Church

The church is a replica of the one built for Bishop Colenso's African congregation in 1856. The new St. Mary's was built in 1884 after the first site was taken for the Natal Parliament Building. The church is a national monument.


Old St Mary's Church (catholic)

This is the church where the Prince Imperial's body lay in state after he was killed in an ambush in the Zulu War of 1879.


Presbyterian Church

The Old Presbyterian Church is a national monument.


Prisoner of War Church
Epworth Road, 200 metres south of the freeway on the left, as one enters Pietermaritzburg from Durban.
This little church was built by Italian prisoners of war incarcerated during World War Two. The fine sandstone building has beautiful stained glass windows and is still in use. It is a national monument.


St George's Garrison Church
Devonshire/Napier Road, Pietermaritzburg
Built in 1897 and used as a military hospital in 1900, it now contains relics of British Military occupation.


St Luke's Church

This church dates back to 1869.


St Mary's Church (Anglican)
Burger Street/Commercial Road, Pietermaritzburg
This church is a replica of the one built for Bishop J.W.Colenso's African congregation in 1856.


St Peter's Church
Church Street
The building was completed in 1857. This church's beautiful stained glass windows are believed to be of flemish origin. Bishop John William Colenso is buried in front of the altar.


Fort

Fort Napier, Pietermaritzburg
Napier Road/Devonshire Road at the south end of Longmarket and Loop Street.
The old fort dates back to 1843 when it was British headquarters in Natal. Interesting artillery pieces are mounted in the grounds. Several parts of the fort are National monuments.

Anglo-Zulu War Memorial
City Garden Square, Church Street; opposite the entrance to the City Hall.
The monument was erected in memory of those who gave their lives in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.


Bushmans River Pass Monument
Town Hall Gardens alongside Commercial Road
This monument was erected by the Natal Carbineers in memory of their comrades who fell at Bushmans River Pass in the Drakensberg on November 4 , 1873, during the campaign against Chief Langalibalele.


Old Government House
Longmarket Street/Church Street, PMB
This historical monument is now part of the college of education for further training. This was once the home of Benjamin Pine, Lieutenant - Governor of Natal. The trial of Langalibalele, Chief of the Hlubi Tribe, once took place in a tent in the grounds.


Sherwood Foresters'Monument
Commercial Road, Pietermaritzburg
The 45th regiment and the sons of England dedicated this monument to those comrades who served and sometimes died in the colony of Natal between 1843 and 1859.


Weeping Cross of Delville Wood
The Garden of Remembrance in Leinster Road
The memorial is in memory of those who gave their lives in a variety of wars. The 'Weeping Cross' often oozes sap on the anniversary of the battle (14 to 18 July 1916) in which so many South Africans lost their lives.

Daniel Lindley Plaque

Longmarket St/Boshoff St
The monument was erected in 1974 in the place where the Rev.Daniel Lindleys house stood. Lindley was the first ordained minister to the Voortrekkers in Natal.

The school was founded in 1863, and was first housed in a building in Longmarket Street, then Loop Street. In 1887 it was moved to its present site in College Road. The main building is in gothic style and there are huge grounds. The Victoria Hall was built in 1899. Clark House and Victoria Hall are National monuments.


Nizamia Madressa Islamic School

This building features a pair of Islamic style minarets and plastered fascia over a colonnaded verandah.

St Charles's College
Scottsville
The college was founded in 1877 as St Charles Grammar School, with Rev Father De Lacy as first principal. The school was in Loop Street opposite St Mary's Catholic Church. In 1912 the Marist Brothers took over St Charles. Three blocks of buildings were erected on a new site at Scottsville in 1924.

The park is so named in commemoration of the marriage of King Edward VII. It is situated along the Umzinduzi River, and was laid out by Mr J.N. Wheeler. It is a sporting and recreation venue.

The Plane Tree Avenue in the Botanical Gardens is a National monument. The trees were planted in 1908.


World's View
Zwartkops Range, 3 kms west of Pietermaritzburg
In 1837-8, the wagons of the Voortrekkers were brought down the slopes of the Drakensberg Mountains into Natal, and many came through here, into the future Pietermaritzburg. Signs of the old route can still be seen. There is a magnificent view of Pietermaritzburg, Table Mountain and the surrounding country. The Old Voortrekker Road is a National monument.

The stature was unveiled on 6 June 1993, to commemorate the centenary of Gandhi's experience at the Pietermaritzburg Railway Station on June 7, 1893, when he was ejected from a first class carriage on the Natal Government Railway because he was not white.

Queen Victoria's Statue
Longmarket Street, in front of the Parliament buildings.
This statue was completed in 1890 and unveiled on July 8 that same year. It is a replica of the marble statue in Sydney, Australia. It was done by the sculptor Boehm.

Sir Theophilus Shepstone is one of the major figures in Natal Colonial History. He was the secretary for native affairs and respected councillor for the Zulus from 1845.

Several centuries old, Hitching rails dot the city to remind tourists and residents of Pietermaritzburg's past reliance of the horse as a mode of transport.

This bell was placed there in 1958 to mark the golden jubilee of the planting of 46 trees in 1908.


South African War Memorial
City Centre, in the old Supreme Court Gardens, now Tatham (or city centre) Gardens.
This structure was erected by the people of Natal in honour of the colonists who died for their sovereign and country during the Boer-War 1899- 1902.


St Peter's Bells
Longmarket Street
These four bells , cast by C&G Mears of London, came to St Peters in 1859. They now hang on a balcony facing Longmarket Street.


War Memorial Arch
Public Gardens adjoining Church Street
The memorial is dedicated to those soldiers from the Pietermaritzburg district who gave their lives during the two world wars.

Siva Soobramoniar and Marriaman Temple

The temple was established in 1898. This temple is the focal point for the annual fire walking festival held on Good Friday.
