It has a superb collection of South African, British and
French 19th
and 20th century
art, with an emphasis on KwaZulu-Natal. The building was
constructed
in 1871 to house
the supreme court. In 1989/90 it was converted into an art
gallery.

Artifacts
Cloete's Cannon
The cannon was used by Colonel Josias Cloete in lifting
the
siege of
the Port Natal
Garrison in 1842. It was brought up to Pietermaritzburg
but not used
in action.

German Field Guns
The guns are in the City Hall Gardens alongside Commercial
Road, and
placed on each
side of the Carbineers' monument.
These are two german field guns captured by Sir Duncan

Police Station
Alexandra Road/ Corner Lindup Road The building served
from 1890
as a barracks for the Natal Mounted
Police (later known
as Natal police). It was later used as the headquarters
building of
the S.A.P. in Natal,
and is still in use by the S. A. Police Services. The
old
police
barracks building was
declared a national monument in February 1992.
Allerton Laboratory
Town Bush Valley near Pietermaritzburg
The first of its kind in South Africa, the lab was
established by the
Natal Government in
1898 to control rinderpest, a deadly cattle disease. Its
first
director was Col.
Pitchford, who achieved enviable results in disease
control. The lab
became an adjunct
to Onderstepoort. It is a national monument.
Allison's Saddlery Building
Pietermaritzburg CBD.
This is an elegant old store with gables, turret and
ironwork.
Andries Pretorius's
House
Corner of Church Street and Boshoff Street
This is the reconstructed thatched-roof, double storey
house of
Andries Pretorius,
the 'Victor' of Blood River. It is part of the
Voortrekker Museum,
and was opened in
December 1981. It contains fine furniture from last
century. The
museum complex, of which
the house is a part, is a national monument.

This attractive red-brick and plaster building has an
ornamental
verandah frieze and
slender columns. It was erected in 1901.
Buchanan Street Baths
Buchanan Street
This is a fine example of the indoor swimming baths found
in
Victorian cities. This large
hall with flemish renaissance gables over the entrance
porch was
built between 1895
and 1898.
City Hall, Pietermaritzburg
City Centre, at the junction of Church Street and
Commercial Road.
The city hall was built on the old site of the
Voortrekkers
council
hall. It was first
built in 1893, but after a fire in 1898 the new building
was ready in
1900. It is the largest
all-brick building south of the equator, and is a national

The building was originally the engineers' offices of the

Railways, but now the local headquarters of the S.A.

Services. It was designed in

It was
noted for flying the Union
Jack as its house flag. A tortoise named Durando was the

Old YMCA Building

This building was completed in 1881 for the YMCA and is a

example of a double storey
verandah home. It was proclaimed a national monument in
1981.
Overpark House

It was built in 1862 as the Presbyterian Manse. For many
years it was
known as the
'Ghost House' and was almost derelict before being
restored in
1980.
Pavilion
The foundation stone was laid in 1897 and it was
officially
opened on
May 24 , 1898.

The prison complex was built in about 1862 and once held

Pietermaritzburg.

This building dates back to 1892. It is built in red
brick
with
contrasting iron stone
facings. Here in 1893, Mahatma Gandhi endured the famous
incident
when he was put off
the train as a person of colour.

This was the first triple-storey house in
Pietermaritzburg. The
design is renaissance revival,
with a lacey, cast-iron Victorian verandah.
Sans Souci

This elaborate mansion took four years to build and was
completed in
1884. It was built
by John Harwin and is a national monument.
Satya Vardhak Crematorium
The Satya Vardhak Sabha was formed in 1928 to promote
principles of
hygiene and the
philosophy of reincarnation as embodied in Vedic
teachings. The
original crematorium
was built in 1928, and was declared a national monument in
January
1993.
Shepstone House
This tall, two storied building was first the home of Sir
Theophilus
Shepstone's eldest
son. At present it is the resident master's home.

Victoria Hall

The hall was begun in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria's
jubilee, but
was only completed
in 1899. During the Boer-War it served as a fever
hospital
and
thereafter as the school
assembly hall. It is a national monument.
Voortrekker House

This is the only surviving double storey Voortrekker House
in
Pietermaritzburg. It was
built by Petrus Pretorius in 1846.

This single storey residence dates back to 1852 and once

farmhouse. It still has
its original yellowwood floors.
Wayland

The large, double-storey house was designed in the gothic

the YMCA as a hostel and then became a luxury home.
Wayland was

This building, the original church of the vow, was built

victory over the Zulus on 16 December 1838 at Blood
River.
The
museum contains a wide
variety of voortrekker relics. Adjacent are Andries
Pretorius's
House, and statues of
Piet Retief and Gert Maritz. The complex is a national
monument.
Italian Church
Church street, 100 metres north of Freedom Square.
This little church is all that remains of the italian
prisoner of war
camp that once
stood here. The church was constructed by the prisoners
and was
concecrated on
March 19, 1944.

World's View
Zwartkops Range, 3 kms west of Pietermaritzburg
In 1837-8, the wagons of the Voortrekkers were brought
down
the
slopes of the
Drakensberg Mountains into Natal, and many came through
here, into
the future
Pietermaritzburg. Signs of the old route can still be
seen. There
is a magnificent view of
Pietermaritzburg, Table Mountain and the surrounding
country. The Old

This statue was completed in 1890 and unveiled on July 8

of the marble statue in Sydney, Australia. It was done

Sir Theophilus Shepstone is one of the major figures in

Queen Victoria's Statue
Longmarket Street, in front of the Parliament
buildings.
This statue was completed in 1890 and unveiled on July 8
that same
year. It is a replica
of the marble statue in Sydney, Australia. It was done
by the
sculptor Boehm.

Standard Bank, Church Street
Several centuries old, Hitching rails dot the city to
remind tourists
and residents of
Pietermaritzburg's past reliance of the horse as a mode of
transport.
McFarlane Bridge
Alexandra Park, over the Umzindusi River This
gracefully
curved
bridge built in 1899 is a good example of functional
ironwork
supported by stone piers.
Old Satya
Vardhak Sabah Crematorium
Cremorne Cemetery In 1928 the Satya Vardak Sabha was
formed to
promote the principles of hygiene and the
philosophy of reincarnation as embodied in Vedic teaching.
The
crematorium is a
National monument.
Slave Bell
Plane Tree Avenue
This bell was placed there in 1958 to mark the golden
jubilee of the
planting of 46 trees
in 1908.
South African War
Memorial
City Centre, in the old Supreme Court Gardens, now Tatham
(or city
centre) Gardens.
This structure was erected by the people of Natal in
honour
of the
colonists who died
for their sovereign and country during the Boer-War 1899-
1902.
St Peter's Bells
Longmarket Street These four bells , cast by C&G Mears
of London,
came to St Peters in 1859. They now
hang on a balcony facing Longmarket Street.
War Memorial Arch
Public Gardens adjoining Church Street The memorial is
dedicated
to those soldiers from the Pietermaritzburg district who
gave
their lives during the two world wars.
