The oldest canoe marathon in Africa, and one of the
toughest on the
international calendar, it involves three days of paddling
and
portaging from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Held every
January.

FEBRUARYMIDMAR MILE:
Held on the Midmar Dam, it attracts more than 10 000
entrants in a variety of age categories. Recognised as
the world's
largest inland swimming race. MAYCARS IN THE PARK:
A national drawcard for anyone interested in wheels - from
vintage
steam vehicles to Ferraris, from Formula One to American
classic
fishtails. Held in Alexandra Park.
ROYAL
SHOW:
An agricultural and community jamboree for the whole
family, it is
the largest event of its kind on the eastern seaboard.
The programme
includes everything from home industries produce and
champion
livestock to show jumping and pop concerts. Held in the
Royal
Showgrounds, Pietermaritzburg. JUNECOMRADES MARATHON:
First run in 1921, in memory of the men who had fallen in
the Great
War, this grueling 88 km challenge, held mid-year between
Pietermaritzburg and Durban, is recognized as one of the
world s
great ultra distance events. The start and finish
alternate each
year. The 2002 Comrades Marathon is scheduled to be
an 'up-run',
with the start in Durban, and the finish in
Pietermaritzburg. E-

SEPTEMBERGARDEN AND LEISURE SHOW:
A must for garden-lovers. Held in September or early
October to
coincide with the Pietermaritzburg's Open Garden season. OCTOBERHILTON DRAMA FESTIVAL:
This festival includes theatre and cabaret staged by the
country's
top talents. DECEMBERMARITZBURG FANTASIA:
A 10-day pre-Christmas celebration held in Alexandra Park
during
December. Evening flea market with Christmas tableau,
children's
